Ten Reasons People Choose to Independently Publish Their Books

1. Creative Control
2. Faster Publication
3. Higher Royalties
4. Ownership of Rights
5. Access to Global Markets
6. Niche Market Opportunities
7. Freedom to Experiment
8. Direct Connection to Readers
9. Lower Barriers to Entry
10. Potential for Long-Term Earnings

Creative Control
Self-publishing offers complete creative control over the content, design, and marketing of a book. Authors can choose their cover designs, interior formatting, and even the type of paper used for printed editions. They’re not limited by the preferences or constraints of traditional publishers, which means their vision for the book remains uncompromised.

Faster Publication
The traditional publishing process can take years, from querying agents to finding a publisher and navigating their production timelines. Self-publishing eliminates these delays, allowing authors to release their books as soon as they are ready. This is particularly appealing for those with timely or urgent messages to share.

Higher Royalties
Self-published authors typically earn higher royalties per book sold compared to traditional publishing deals. While traditional publishers often offer around 10–15% royalties, self-published authors can earn 35–70% of the book’s sale price, depending on the platform.

Ownership of Rights
In traditional publishing, authors often sign away certain rights to their work, such as foreign distribution or film adaptations. Self-published authors retain full ownership of their intellectual property, giving them flexibility to pursue opportunities as they arise.

Access to Global Markets
With platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), IngramSpark, and Kobo, self-published authors can reach readers around the world. These tools make it easy to distribute digital and print books across various markets without requiring a traditional publisher’s network.

Niche Market Opportunities
Traditional publishers often seek books with broad commercial appeal, making it hard for niche topics to gain traction. Self-publishing allows authors to target specific audiences with unique interests, from obscure hobbies to localized history, ensuring their books find the right readers.

Freedom to Experiment
Self-publishing allows authors to take risks with unconventional genres, formats, or narratives. Writers can explore non-linear storytelling, interactive eBooks, or multi-volume series without worrying about adhering to industry norms or publisher expectations.

Direct Connection to Readers
Self-publishing enables authors to build a closer relationship with their audience. They can interact directly with readers through social media, newsletters, and personal websites, creating a loyal fanbase that supports their future projects.

Lower Barriers to Entry
For new authors, breaking into traditional publishing can feel like an insurmountable challenge, requiring a perfect pitch, a good agent, and marketable writing. Self-publishing removes these barriers, empowering anyone with a story to share to bring their work to life.

Potential for Long-Term Earnings
Unlike traditionally published books, which may go out of print after a few years, self-published books can remain available indefinitely. This ensures a steady stream of passive income as long as the book continues to resonate with readers.
